Stephen P. Buehrer
Steve Buehrer heads the Firm's Ohio practice in the area of public policy and government regulation. He has extensive experience and knowledge in state and local government and politics. Over the years Steve has built a reputation as a respected leader not only across Ohio, but across the country.
Steve's experience extends to both public and private sector. Most recently, he was appointed by Governor John Kasich as the Administrator/CEO of the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation where he was responsible for leading the largest state-fund insurance system in the nation with nearly 2,000 employees and $2 billion in annual premium. His experience in state administration also included serving in the Administration of Governor George Voinovich for nearly eight years in senior positions at four different state agencies including leading the state's Human Resource Department.
Steve was a member of the Ohio Senate representing Northwest Ohio from 2007 until 2011. His colleagues in the Senate elected him Majority Whip in 2010. Additionally, Steve was the chairman of the Senate Insurance, Commerce and Labor Committee and the Highways and Transportation Committee. He also served as vice chairman of the Energy and Public Utilities Committee in addition to his membership on the Health and Judiciary Committees.
Steve also served as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1999 until 2006. In addition to four years as the Assistant Majority Floor Leader, he was chairman of the State Government Committee, vice chairman of the Public Utilities Committee and served on a number of committees including Finance, Criminal Justice, and Transportation. As a legislator, he was widely recognized for his accomplishments including winning five Watchdog of the Treasury awards and being named National Legislator of the Year by the American Legislative Exchange Council. In his leadership roles, he was elected as the chairman of the Midwest Council of State Governments (CSG) and served as national CSG vice chairman.
In addition to his state level public service, Steve has been a small business owner and practiced law in the private sector for 13 years. In that role, he practiced in the areas of civil litigation, real estate, criminal prosecution, probate and served as the City Law Director for several communities. Steve and his wife are the proud parents of three sons.
